When Children Want a Cellphone
These days, it’s not only adults that are focused on getting the latest cellphones; complete with the latest in technology; special features and all the available applications that can be crammed into one tiny mobile communications gadget.
Children too, have become hooked, for lack of a better term, to cellular phones. They see their moms and dads clutching the latest phone known to man and they want to have the same too; not only for its various applications but more so to brag to their friends. It poses some kind of message for kids when they have the same cool gadgets like everyone else.
SHOULD YOU GIVE YOUR CHILD TO OWN A CELLPHONE?
What happens then when your children starts to ask for a phone? Should you just give in without hesitation? There’s no question that young children should really not be permitted to own a cellphone just yet. But for the older children, it wholly depends on the parents’ discretion.
Cellular phones are necessary for communication and if you are away most of the time and your children happen to be out too; with their friends or some school function; getting in contact with them each time both parents and kids are apart is important. Cellphones will definitely make this easy for everyone.
In addition, cellphones can be very helpful also to kids in times of emergencies.
TEACHING KIDS TO BE RESPONSIBLE
Another way to turn this cellphone ownership issue into something positive is teaching children about responsibility. Setting parameters as to their usage is a key factor when thinking about giving kids their own phones. While listening to songs and taking pictures may be a few of the things that children want to be able to do with their cellphones; permitting them to surf the internet or chat without parental guidance should be something parents need to think twice about.
In this case, getting them a cellphone with only the bare essentials could be the answer. Also, giving these cellphones as incentives for doing well in school will train children that they have to show good behavior in order to be allowed to have their own cellphones.
Lastly, one way to also teach them about responsibility is teaching them to save allowance so they can get their own prepaid loads; or both parents and children can split the cost of the cellphone. There are various ways for parents to get something constructive from these tools.
